How PRINTlovers #102 is made

Every year is full of anniversaries. Have you ever thought about it? We start with a round-about anniversary such as, for example, the centenary of the death of Franz Kafka and Vladimir Lenin in 1924, and end up opening a Pandora's box of events more or less distant in time. Like the 80th anniversary of the birth of the RAI, the 40th anniversary of the birth of the Mac - how can we forget Apple's famous launch commercial, 1984, inspired by George Orwell's novel of the same name and filmed by Ridley Scott? - or the 20th anniversary of Facebook (yes, 20 years). And Nirvana, do you remember Nirvana until that tragic April 1994? Surely, we have more historical memory of them than the equally tragic death of Alan Turing in 1954. Or of the invention of the Rubik's cube in 1974: fifty years spent breaking our heads with that 'clac-clac-clac'. When we started looking for dates to remember in this 2024, a lot of stories of scientific, technological, political, artistic, and sporting ingenuity popped up, and they came out a bit haphazardly, like newspaper clippings pulled blindly out of a bag to make a Dadaist collage, potentially as infinite as the cycle of creativity is infinite: make, create, sleep, repeat. We challenge you to spot all these stories... and find the ones that are missing.

Cover and back cover design: O,Nice! Design

Back cover:
Paper: Arena High Definition Extra White 300g
Arena High Definition is the new addition to the Fedrigoni Arena® family. Made of pure ECF cellulose, FSC® certified, it features a matt surface and a natural touch, guaranteeing high-definition printing performance. Available in Extra White and White, it is excellent for publishing, creative communication, and graphic design projects, such as covers, inserts, books, catalogues, and magazines. It can also be used for packaging coordinates and greeting cards.

Digital printing and finishing: Varigrafica
Varigrafica printed the back cover with Komori technology on the innovative Arena HD Extra White to celebrate a year filled with anniversaries. The paper surface and the H-UV digital offset printing give the images a significant saturation. However, the real strength of this design is the play of Easter eggs that readers have to unearth, emphasised through a variable number of randomised finishings. Using Varigrafica's latest arrival, the Scodix Ultra 6000 Press HD in the 76x106 format and three colours of the Luxor 351 family, random combinations of finishings have been created in which gold, silver and metallic red with a 3D effect chase each other to provide the first clues in a treasure hunt! The variants are in the hands of our readers, and the most attentive will know how to look beyond the digital HiLux silk-screen prints that were produced: the list was a long one... and we hope we have done justice to all.

Finishing: Luxoro Scodix 351®
The exuberant cover of this issue features many collage-style elements. Some are highlighted because they are finished with metallic effects that are eye-catchers. Here and there we find bright and brilliant red accents achieved with Scodix 351® Red, an elegant and versatile silver, Scodix 351® Silver gloss and an everlasting gold that lends a warm and refined aura to the design, Scodix 351® Gold gloss. All Scodix 351® colours are Luxoro's finishing offerings for digital metallisation.
